ISFA U11 SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT - NATIONAL FINALS

ALTRINCHAM PREP SUPREME

The rain poured down but nothing could prevent the enthusiasm from shining through as 18 schools and a large crowd enjoyed an action-packed day of football on the pristine pitches at The FA National Football Centre, St. George’s Park on 24th April.

The schools where split into three groups of six with the top two and two third best place schools progressing to the quarter finals. In the group stages it was pleasing to see all 18 schools get points on the board. In Group A both Cothill House and Duncombe did not lose a game and both progressed to the quarter finals with 11 points after three wins and two draws. The Grammar School at Leeds finished the group in third place but unfortunately did not progress to the knockout stages, as both third placed school in Groups B and C, although finishing with the same points, finished with superior goal difference.

In Group B Castle Court with 11 points and Lady Barn House on 9 points both advanced to the knockout stages following an unbeaten run. Brighton College also progressed in third place.

Altrincham Prep dominated Group C, going into their final game knowing that they had already won the group after four consecutive wins. However, they did not take a clean sweep and were held to a 2-2 draw by Yardley Court in their final group game. Lochinver House went through as group runners up, whilst Dulwich College also advanced to the quarter finals having finished in third place.

In the quarter finals third place Dulwich College knocked out group winners Cothill House with a single goal in a very tight game which could have gone either way. Altrincham Prep maintained their form to defeat Brighton College 1-0 and Lady Barn House secured a semi-final spot after a 2-1 over Duncombe Sch.  However, the tension mounted in the final quarter, where Castle Court and Lochinver House drew 2-2 and had to go to a marathon penalty shoot-out before Lochinver House finally ran out eventual winners.  These results meant that all three qualifiers from Group C had reached the semi-finals.

As expected the semi-finals where tight affairs. Altrincham Prep. met Dulwich College for the second time in the day. Dulwich College fought hard, keen to get revenge for their earlier defeat, and where very unlucky not to score, coming close on several occasions. However, Altrincham kept calm and secured their spot in the final after a 1-0 win, from an outstanding strike which was perfectly placed in the bottom corner. The second semi-final between Lochinver House and Lady Barn House had to be decided on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Once again it was Lochinver House held their nerve and came through to secure their spot in the National Final.

Both finalists had already met in the group stages but now, with the trophy at stake, it was all to play for. The final displayed the excellent football that had been witnessed throughout the day. Both teams looked to pass the ball and build up play creating attacking opportunities. The game was goalless going into the second half and looked to be heading for extra time. However, Altrincham broke the deadlock after an excellent strike. Lochinver House pushed for an equaliser but Altrincham maintained their composure to be crowned the 2017/18 ISFA U11 Seven-a-Side National Champions.
